Meet the
2nd Man to Walk on the Moon – Buzz Aldrin!

In 1969, the aircraft carrier USS Hornet recovered the first two NASA
missions that landed men on the moon – Apollo 11 and Apollo 12. The ship is the largest surviving artifact from these
incredible events, which are among the most important in the history of humankind.
Celebrate the 40th anniversary of man’s first steps on the moon
by attending Splashdown 2009 on the USS Hornet -- the primary recovery ship for the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 missions.
Splashdown 2009 will showcase Hornet’s role in the recovery part
of the Apollo missions, as well as exhibiting other spacecraft recovery missions performed by the US Navy in support of the
Mercury, Gemini, Skylab and Soyuz launches.
Visitors will see how this generation of Americans were inspired by a
shared vision and how numerous organizations stretched to reach this lofty goal. The four-day festival will include opportunities
for visitors to meet various representatives from NASA and the space industry including astronauts, key naval officers, recovery
pilots, and former USS Hornet crew.
Don’t Miss This Opportunity
On Saturday, July 25th, the featured speaker will be former astronaut
Buzz Aldrin, Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 11 and the 2nd man to walk on the moon.The USS Hornet will serve as a premier platform
for the release of Buzz Aldrin’s newest book: “Magnificent Desolation: The Long Journey Home from the Moon.” The book is a memoir about his triumphs in space and the hard times back
on Earth. Following his public speech, Buzz will be signing copies of his new book for the first time in the SF Bay Area.
More Booksignings
In addition, Bob Fish, Apollo curator for the USS Hornet Museum, will
be available to sign his new book, “Hornet Plus Three: The Story of the Apollo 11 Recovery.” This book is the first authoritative story of the Navy’s support of America’s
race to the Moon and contains personal information from members of the “command element.” |

DISPLAYS
Special exhibits will include:
- Apollo boilerplate capsule CM011A, used for the AS202 mission in 1966;
it was recovered by the USS Hornet after orbiting the earth and landing in the Pacific Ocean
- The Mobile Quarantine Facility (MQF) used by the Apollo 14 astronauts
following their splashdown… to protect Earth from potential “moon germs”
- The SH-3H SeaKing helicopter that was used in the filming of the movie
“Apollo 13” and similar to the helicopter used to transfer the Apollo 11 astronauts from the command module to
the USS Hornet
- A HUP-1 Retriever helicopter similar to the one that transferred John
Glenn from the USS Noa to the USS Randolph following his Friendship 7 mission as the first American to orbit the earth

- An H-34 Seahorse helicopter similar to those used by the Marines for
all Mercury recoveries
- Never-before-seen photos and video footage taken during the Apollo 11
and Apollo 12 recoveries
- Artifacts and memorabilia from the USS Hornet Museum archives, such as
a Biological Isolation Garment designed for use by the helicopter pilot on the Apollo 12 recovery
- A photo-based exhibit that documents a broader range of recoveries including
the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Soyuz activities
- Space artifacts on loan from The W Foundation and Chabot Space &
Science Center

ACTIVITIES
Visitors young and old will be able to engage in a variety of space-related
activities:
- Watch demonstrations of robotics technology and model Mars rovers
- Build model rockets
- View never-before-seen Apollo film footage and photographs
- See actual moon rocks on display
- Learn and have fun with astronomy, science, and history activities
- Participate in educational programs hosted by other Bay Area museums
and organizations
